It appears Princes Harry and William's 2016 visit to Pinewood Studios to meet the cast of Star Wars was not just for show, with reports the Royal brothers will appear in the new Star Wars movie as stormtroopers.

Actor John Boyega, who played Finn in the seventh Star Wars film The Force Awakens, told The Hollywood Reporter the Princes filmed scenes during their visit to the studio in April last year.

The two Princes were photographed battling each other with lightsabers and posing with Star Wars director Rian Johnson, producer Ram Bergman, stars Mark Hamill, Boyega, Daisy Ridley and, of course, Chewbacca .

During a taping of THR's Actor Roundtable, Boyega said actor Tom Hardy was also on the set at the same time.

Take That singer Gary Barlow also confirmed he had shot a scene a month earlier.

The four are rumoured to appear in the same scene of The Last Jedi as stormtroopers.

Boyega joked sharing the scene with the Royals made for a "strange contrast of a weird family".

"It's the best of both worlds for me," he said.

A teaser for the new film, Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi, dropped in April, giving off a less-than-optimistic tone and leaving fans hyped.

The film will be released in Australia December 14.
