This may not last long — and you’d hope there’s a statement forthcoming from the Prime Minister to clarify — but as of this moment we’re in a bizarre situation where:
- Malcolm Turnbull is due to leave the country for Israel tomorrow.
- Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce cannot become Acting Prime Minister in Turnbull’s absence, because his election to parliament has been ruled in breach of the constitution.
- It isn’t clear who will be in charge if Turnbull leaves, as he had an opportunity to clarify this in his press conference, but didn’t.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is the obvious choice but right now there is no clarity.
Sky News has reported that Turnbull may delay his trip to Israel.
For a country with as much government as Australia has, it sure is a bizarre juncture.
