AUSTRALIAN Robert Cameron has plunged to his death from the rooftop of a Cambodian school 18 years after he was the subject of an international manhunt in a kidnap plot.

Cameron, 63, a dual British and Australian national was found dead on the ground at the International Cambodian School (ICS) in Phnom Penh five days ago.

Found at 9.30am by a teacher who went outside to smoke a cigarette, Cameron appeared to have jumped from the building’s sixth floor to his death, Cambodia Expats Online revealed.

Cambodian police in the country’s capital are treating the death as a suicide.

Cameron, who lived in Phnom Penh with his Cambodian wife, appears to have been teaching English in the school at the time of his death.

He becomes the second ICS English teacher expat to have died in the last week, after his American colleague Steve Cramer was found dead from an apparent heart attack.

Cameron’s history as an international fugitive at the centre of a kidnap plot was revealed by the Scottish Daily Mail.

Once one of Scotland’s most notorious fugitives, he kidnapped his nine-year-old daughter Sasha in 1999, and hid out on a luxury yacht sailing through South East Asia.

The kidnap occurred during an access visit in France, where Cameron was living, and followed a lengthy custody battle between he and Sasha’s mother.

For 27 months, father and daughter island hopped as Interpol searched for his 40-foot yacht Valkyrie.

The Scotsman reported that Sasha was rescued when Indonesian immigration officials swooped in Makassar on the island of Suklawesi, after Valkyrie suffered engine troubles.

Sasha later said she had lived “like a pirate” eating rice, fish and vegetables and rarely able to go ashore.

Following the girl’s rescue, Cameron reportedly continued to email his daughter, sparking fears he might attempt a further abduction.

Wanted by both UK and French police, Cameron nevertheless evaded arrest.

He made his way to Cambodia where he married a local woman and they had a son and daughter.
