THERE is no doubt that green living is the way of the future.

Just take the popular new TV program on the ABC ‘War on Waste’, a three-part series which aims to look at how Australia can reduce its waste.

The show has people talking, and it made us think, what features in Adelaide homes appeal to buyers who want sustainability?

From chicken coops to solar panels, here are some green-friendly homes on the market in SA.

A property at 91 Blakiston Rd, Littlehampton features the “Taj Mahal” of chook pens and offers a sustainable lifestyle in the Hills, according to Harris Real Estate sales consultant Jason Snowy Carter.

“I think anyone moving to the Adelaide Hills and looking for a lifestyle property want that for their children,” he said.

“It is lovely to have the chickens roaming around and collecting the eggs — it's a big win because they want to have that engagement with the environment.

“A lot of families now are looking for that lifestyle, which is so different from city living.”

Mr Cater said more and more home buyers were looking at homes with green alternative, which allow them to teach their children about sustainable living.

“I think people are becoming far more conscious about how they live, there is no two ways about that,” he said.
“I think people are looking at sustainable ways that they can live off the land. I’m seeing a huge increase in vegie boxes and vegie gardens.

“It is a cost-saving mechanism but also it is about people encouraging and teaching their children that not everything comes from the supermarket — that we have the ability to grow our food.”

Set on five acres, the Littlehampton property also features five bedrooms, three paddocks and a solar-heated swimming pool.

Another property at 26 Pike St, Oakbank will also allow its new owners to lead a green lifestyle.

The grand property is surrounded by established gardens and includes an orchard and vegetable beds. It also has stables, paddocks and both bore and mains water.
