29 Goldies Lane will be converted into a monastery.

WOODEND’s landmark Campaspe House, which sits among gardens styled by pioneering landscape designer Edna Walling, will be given new life as a monastery.

The 7.28ha property at 29 Goldies Lane has been bought by the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne and Affiliated Regions for an undisclosed sum.

CBRE agent Scott Callow would not comment on the sale price but it is understood the vendors wanted $3.5 million for the sprawling site.

The former boutique accommodation facility will become the Archangel Michael Monastery for Nuns and a retreat centre for women.

It features 16 courtyard rooms, a two-bedroom cottage, restored 1920s manor, swimming pool, tennis court, croquet lawn and conference room among its facilities.

Mr Callow said the property’s general residential zoning had drawn a wide range of interested parties for education, recreational and community uses.

“The Coptic Church was drawn to Campaspe House because it provides a picturesque and serene rural setting, which is ideal for monastic contemplation and reflection. The opportunity to further develop facilities as required was also of key importance,” he said.
